The second of our empowerment courses took place on 16th July. Unfortunately due to illness and other unforeseen circumstances, some participants were unable to attend on the day. However, five people come together and shared their difficulties, experiences and insights into their sight loss and those who were sighted shared their challenges and delights in supporting those with low vision. Sessions included input from the Eye Clinic Liaison Officer (ECLO) in York to explain her role and the impact sight loss can have on a person.

After a delicious lunch, there were interactive sessions on using different senses to aid sight loss involving the use of a sensory box full of different textures, sounds etc. This enabled discussion on strategies to manage life better when visually impaired. There was also a session on stress management and relaxation techniques that people could take away and use at home, and help them to cope better and feel more confident.

To round off the day, participants set a goal to work towards to improve their confidence. It was agreed that peer support would be beneficial and participants suggested the idea of a luncheon club with social activities and this is now under development.
